Computer Virus Scam

Samara

Ruination
From AOL Wallet Pop UK:
"Indian call centres are running a scam to make you think that your computer is infected with a virus, and the only way to get rid of it is to pay a fee of Ј185.

The caller knows the name and address of the person he is calling, and claims to be from Microsoft. He says your ISP has informed the company that you have a problem and it can only be fixed with his help. If you don't, your computer will break down completely.

He then tells you to go to your PC and to open a piece of software called Windows Event Viewer. For most computers, this will display a list of events labelled "Warning" or "Critical". It sounds worrying. It isn't – it's actually quite normal and nothing to be concerned about.

But the caller doesn't tell you that. He guides you through a series of steps to "fix" it. And the final step is to access a website and download a program that allows the caller to remotely access and control your machine. He then installs more software.

At that point, he mentions that you owe Ј185 for the service, and if you refuse to pay, he has control of your computer. You can imagine what that means.

The call centres are mostly based in Calcutta and use databases of computer firms' customers. The company provides a UK phone number to contact it, but this routes through an IP address, so calls end up in India.

PayPal has closed accounts the scammers have used, but the fraudsters keep opening new accounts.

Web hosting firms have also closed sites used by the con men. But it's not hard to keep switching hosts.

It is a good idea to check what people say on web forums about such firms, but the con men often post their own complimentary messages to crowd out the negatives.

One indication of an unprofessional service is that spelling and grammar of posters suggests they are they Indian scammers, rather than the British, Australian or North American users/victims."

Just A Warning.
