Microsoft bets on cloud computing as Amazon suffers outage

Cloud computing—providing scalable Internet-based software services distributed across disparate datacenters—is currently en vogue. Major industry players are investing in cloud computing datacenters and research infrastructure, and some commercial services such as Amazon's S3 storage service and EC2 compute service have been available for a couple of years now. Cloud computing applications and services have been less forthcoming—the highest profile users of EC2 have probably been spammers using the service to send bulk e-mail—but momentum is growing, and over the past week Microsoft has hinted at its own plans to stick its head in the cloud.
