After remaining largely mum about the next version of its flagship PC operating system, Microsoft says it will provide some details about Windows 7, the successor to Windows Vista, at its Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles in late October.

Registration for the conference is scheduled to go live Wednesday, along with some early session abstracts that people will no doubt be scouring for clues about the next Windows version. Among other things, the company is expected to talk about new touch-interface and graphics features to be included in the next Windows version, said Tim O'Brien, senior director in the company's platform strategy group.
