Ok I solved my problem - all i need to do is to use ucl to load the games not using steam. They work like a charm.

So I can run it off of steam.

When I looked using cf toolbox, all of my files were up to date except for that gcf which I thought was probably the reason

I'll take a look at it as soon as I get back to my desktop later tonight. Ok..so surprisingly the pack did not have the ncf i needed. Still waiting on one...

Ok so I tried [atching, then I replaced the actual file but im still getting the error. Im starting to think it's not the half life engine...but something else?

Fantastic! Though when i tried to update my very (very) outdated half engine.gcf, by simply replacing it in my steamapps folder, i got an error when trying to run any half life 1 game saying: "Steam has found a problem with your local game files They will now be required from the server"...
