It is possible to share folders such as materials,models,sound with the use of NTFS junctions. Look on google for NTFSLink and that will allow you to create the shared folders :) I do not see the advantage to making a standalone now that emulators support GCF files though, what are the advantages??

Why extract GCFs? There are emulators that will let you run from GCF which is better for portable version as GCF is compressed and uses less space :D

steam isnt over 900mb.. that must've come with content, just get the SteamInstaller.msi and install that. It's like 50-100mb (installed, download itself is like 10mb or so -- From what I recall, don't quote me!)
