Sins of a Solar Empire Updating

I know the game isn't available over Steam, but typically this forum knows what it's talking about. Anyone know how to update the game without using Impulse?

do u need v1.2 update? otherwise u can use Hamachi or Tuungle (good for small private games)
Or are u looking for having big online games withlots of random ppl?
