My friend has bought Modern Warfare 2 legit, he is going to give me the gcf and ncf files for Steam, would that allow me to play online? Or what else would I need to do?

Goto alterIWnet and download the patch, copy to modern warfare installation, or in this case the common folder in the steam directory and start the game and let it update. You will not be able to play your freind tho as these are alternat servers, but on the plus side they have dedicated servers now and have had mods for some time
