Team Fortress 2 Hamachi not working, can't connect after 4 retries

I've never really played multiplayer, except CoD occasionally. I downloaded a non steam version of Team Fortress 2. I found a guide on the net on geekescape to play with hamachi. I made a network on hamachi, friend's on it. I followed the guide, typed in "sv_lan 0" and then changed the map. But when i told my friend to join, it tried connecting 4 times and then gave an error. So its not working. I'd be very happy if anyone helped me out with this. I badly want to play with my friends. Thanks.

Just use tunngle, its waaaay better than hamachi, way easier to connect to servers with.

connect directly. you don't need hamachi.
